A couple of hundred kilometres from here one of the highest death tolls of any natural disaster in modern times mounts in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.
Today the Sydney Morning Herald reported:
About 100,000 people are feared to have been killed and at least 1.5 million people left homeless after south Burma was devastated by cyclone Nargis.
But Burma’s military authorities are refusing to accept international help.
The international church I am attending here in Chiang Mai has a number of congregation members who are Burmese and are in regular contact with the Burmese church.
Because they are Burmese nationals they do not need visas to enter the country.
Over the next seven days they are rapidly collecting as many clothes and medical supplies as they can acquire and personally taking them to the Delta to be distributed by the head of the Delta churches.
While the world waits to get into Burma here is your opportunity to help immediately and directly. The church has put out a call to anyone who has items to donate to bring them to church next Sunday. I will be going into Chiang Mai on Saturday to buy cheap clothing and other essentials to be sent into the country.
Please deeply pray and consider if you are in a position to assist, and if you are, please contact me. Any amount of money you can donate will go a long way in Thai baht. I will send you an itemised list of what I have purchased with your donation.
The need is urgent and very few workers in the world are being allowed into the country. So please consider how you can help and if you can share this with anyone who knows and trusts me to faithfully administer their donation.
If you can help please contact me via email jonathon.flegg@gmail.com or telephone +66 806 798 430.
