I spotted this baby elephant on the side of the road today. He was an absolute riot. His name is Sandy.
Three things I took away from the ‘experience’.
One, they’re not as smelly as I imagined (at least this one wasn’t).
Two, they have hair, like on their head, but it’s like thin old man hair so it must do jack squat.
Third, its totally freaky when that trunk think starts pressing you all over for bamboo pieces. You forget its attached to an elephant and it just feels like its going to sucker onto your face and suck your brain out through your nose, or something equally invasive.
After the monkeys the elephants are definitely my favourite South East Asian animal. The Buddhists around here revere and honour them as the highest eschelon of animal life before being reincarnated as a human being. I’d believe that if I believed in reincarnation!
I bumped into Sandy on the motorcycle trip out to Mar Ngat Dam for an afternoon with some old and new friends. They had rented this neat house boat for an overnight birthday party, where you just chill out on a floating bamboo house. All for a few bucks per night. Sweet as.

Oh, yeah. Can you play ‘Spot the Gigantic Buddha’ in the absolute middle of nowhere? I found him on the way to the dam too.
